The Great Lakes Loons are a Single-A (Low A) partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and play in the Midwest League. On June 2, 2006, the Michigan Baseball Foundation finalized the purchase agreement of the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays, paving the way for the team to be relocated to Midland, MI.

On August 18, 2006, over 50,000 tickets were sold when ticket packages went on sale. One week later, the team name, mascot and merchandise were unveiled to an estimated crowd of 3,500 in downtown Midland.

On September 28, 2006, The Great Lakes Loons and the Los Angeles Dodgers announced the teams had agreed to a two-year Player Development Contract for the Class-A affiliation. Dodgers Hall of Fame Manager Tommy Lasorda was on hand to make the announcement with Michigan Baseball Foundation President Bill Stavropoulos, Midland-native and then Dodgers Director of Player Development Terry Collins and Loons leadership and staff.

The Loons Inaugural game was played on April 13, 2007 in front of a capacity crowd of 5,454.
