Senate OKs Smoking Ban In Bars & Restaurants

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The Michigan Senate has voted to ban smoking in all bars, restaurants and workplaces. Thursday's 25-12 vote came after smoking-ban legislation sat five months in a committee where bills traditionally have gone to die. The bill heads back to the House, which passed it last year.

Unlike the House version, the Senate version makes no special exceptions for casinos, bingo halls and other buildings. The House could vote as early as next week, though it remains to be seen if lawmakers will agree to an outright ban. Governor Granholm says she will sign a smoking ban.
