Northbound Z Bridge Won't Open For Memorial Day

Repairs to the the Zilwaukee Bridge have hit another snag. The latest delay means the bridge won't be open for Memorial Day weekend to accomodate northbound drivers. The northbound lanes of I-75 over the Z-bridge were closed to replace the 3-foot diameter bridge bearing.  But work had to be suspended early last month, when workers unexpectedly encountered some steel reinforcing bars, and accidentally cut them. Design engineers and national experts have recommended installation of a steel bracket as the safest solution to fix the problem. It's fabrication of the bracket that's now taking longer than expected.
