CMU Takes Steps To Prevent Meningitis Spread

Health care providers have treated about 70 people who may have had contact with a Central Michigan University student who died of bacterial meningitis. More than 150 people have been interviewed since 26-year-old LaMott Smith died May 7th. The Sterling Heights senior became ill May 6th in Coopersville in western Michigan's Ottawa County.
Health department inspectors are trying to contact others who may have had contact with Smith between April 22nd and May 7th. That includes roommates, household members or significant others who may have shared utensils or beverages with Smith.
Symptoms of bacterial meningitis include sudden onset of flu-like symptoms, stiff neck, headaches or nausea. people with these symptoms should contact their doctor or the nearest emergency room.
